Zetsuen no Tempest/ Blast of Tempest (2012)

I am writing this anime review circa one year after watching it. I did have to "refresh" my memories but some things were not forgotten. For instance the fact that you can relate the whole story to Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and "The Tempest". What's funny the anime has Tempest in its title, and considering this, today's anime review is on "Zetsuen no Tempest" or " Blast of Tempest".

 PLOT AND STORY LINE

It's really hard to decide where to start this story. Let's try it like this. You have a brother whose adopted sister has been killed. The boyfriend of the sister is his best friend, but he doesn't know that. Then there is a princess who is the strongest mage in the world but  has been left on a lonely island by her own clan because she would stop them in some evil plan. One day, their paths cross and the story of Zetsuen no Tempest begins.
Hakaze Kusaribe, the princess of all sorcerers was stuffed into a barrel and stranded on a lonely island where she can't use magic. Still she somehow manages to get in touch with a guy over a wooden doll that he wears as a necklace. That guy was Fuwa Mahiro. He agreed to help her stop the evil leader of her clan, Samon, but only under one condition. She will use her magic and find the murderer of his sister Fuwa Aika. After being away for about two months Yoshino Takigava, finaly get's to see his best friend again while visiting the grave of his dead girlfriend Aika. He was very surprised to see his friend being able to cast magic but after explaining everything to him Yoshino decides to help Mahiro in achieving his one goal. To revenge his younger sister Aika.
This is how the whole story starts. An awesome battle between good and evil begins. A story full of magic, action fights, drama, mystery etc. It was epic...In the first eight episodes at least, and maybe in the last four. The part from 9-20 was just crap. It was so disappointing. I mean I expected an awesome story trough out the whole show but in the end I was just happy it was over. Now why?
First of all, the thing that made me nearly quit the show was the middle of the show. Now I don't want to spoil anything, but in the part I expected the most action becomes just a dialog that lasted for four episodes if I remember. Yeah, just talk your opponent to death. That was so boring, the magic was gone, the action was gone and so did the entertainment. It was gone.
Secondly, the huge amount of plot holes. I think I mentioned plot holes in a lot of reviews  but it's because I really hate them. Zetsuen no Tempest is after Darker than Black and An Irregular at Magic High School the one with the most plot holes.
Now, the third thing. I really have nothing against plot twists. I like them actually because of that surprise and the sudden change, but. Yeah there is a but. If the twists are bad and they just shatter all the good things of a show, well that makes me rather sad. The whole show looses its sense, the characters become boring, the plot goes nowhere and you just loose your will of continuing watching it.
It's a pity because the show starts indeed very good. The idea behind the anime is intriguing  and the whole plot and story was nicely imagined.
Now to the things that made me watch Zetsuen no Tempest till the end. THE FLASHBACKS. Although being dead the whole time, Aika gets a huge importance in the show trough all the flashbacks. And believe me, the flashbacks are the ones that kept the show going on. Also one awesome thing, as I mentioned in the intro, the connection with Hamlet and The Tempest. The seek for revenge from Hamlet and the injustice of "fate controlling" from The Tempest gave the show that pinch of uniqueness. I really enjoyed trying to find connections to these works and listening to Aika's quotations.
An awesome plot that looses it self a bit in the middle but finds it self in the end again.

 CHARACTERS

I will start with my favorite character in this anime. Fuwa Mahiro is a hot-headed, aggressive and a persistent young boy. He has only one goal in his life and he will do anything to accomplish it. In his wish for revenge he does a lot spontaneous  and  unpredictable things putting his own life unconsciously one the line. He has his own principles and doesn't care a lot about what others think. He is also a guy who has that older brother complex wanting to protect Aika from all harm in the world. Sadly, he is not able to do so blaming him slef for her death trough out the whole anime. Now the thing I mostly liked about him is that he was different. His behavior and his looks really are incomparable to any other anime character. I love unique.

Next on the main character list is Mahiro's best and I think only friend Yoshino Takigava. Now this guy is the complete opposite of Mahiro. While the one does everything without thinking, Yoshino firstly thinks everything trough and then makes a proper decision. He is also gentle and rather shy, making him look like a shrinking violet. He is also very clever and reasonable for his young age. His intelligence was the only bright point of the dark middle (episode) age of Zetsuen no Tempest. Yoshino is also one of the guys that keeps his emotions inside not letting the world know how he really feels. "Even if I cry, nothing will change" says Yoshiro while talking about Aika once. A very sensitive guy who is just afraid of showing his true feelings.

Nah, there she is. Fuwa Aika. The only dead person of the show that affects it the most at the same time. First thing that has to be said about this girl is her ability to control the mind of others. She really is talented in lying, manipulating and faking. I mean it is hard to be a nice and cute little sister in one moment and in an instance to change your personality completely. Although looking very strong and independent Aika becomes just another victim of a tragedy written by someone else, saying that was just her fate. She always believed that every pesron has his own fate and that he has no power to change it. Basicaly, she is going with the flow, not even trying to take her fate into her own hands.

And this my dear readers is the strongest sorcerer of all. Princess Hakaze Kusaribe  is introduced as a badass, strong character who can cast some awesome magic. A very interesting and likable character that also becomes a victim of the midpoint, because after the eleventh episode she becomes nothing else than an annoying and generic tsundere whose main weakness becomes a stupid crush. She is even willing to give up her life because she is afraid that  her love might affect her mission. Come on, what happened to the mastermind from the beginning who made it to think of a perfect plan of how to take back her clan again? Thanks, anime makers, for this disappointing character.

 ANIMATION AND STYLE

Now, if there is one thing that is worth talking about in this anime than animation. It is awesome. As always Bones production did a great job as most of the anime from 2012. Just watching the action scenes makes you realize how awesomely everything is done. The colors, the effects, the "spell castin", everything. I have a bad animation complex. I easily quit watching anime with a bad animation. Hellsing for instance, but let's talk about it some other time. But what makes the animation stand out is still the style. The characters, especially Mahiro and Yoshino, really look kinda different, but definitely in a good way. Great job and a good reason to try to forgive the midpoint catastrophe.

 CONCLUSION

It is really hard to conclude an anime such as Zetsuen no Tempest. The beginning, or let's say the first ten episodes were indeed awesome, and they promised a lot. But after that the only thing left is great disappointment. It does comes back in the last few episodes but that's not it. Just think how many people quit watching. However, you can't say that it is not worth giving it a try. If you like more drama than action then, Zetsuen no Tempest would be anime for you. But of you are more an action fan then watch the first ten episodes, read what will happen in the next ten, and than finish watching the last four episodes. My rating 6,99.

Elfen Lied: ANIME REVIEW

How do you pronounce this anime's title? Is it /leid or /leed or /lead? There are a lot of people arguing about this. It is even a discussion topic on My Anime List. My answer: This anime's title takes its name from a German song that is featured in it. That's why, in my opinion, we should stick to the German pronunciation which would be /elfen leed, and when you translate it into English you get the title of the anime I am reviewing today, "Elve's Song". But because Elve's Song sounds kinda strange I'll keep on saying Elfen Lied.

 Plot and Story Line

Imagine now you live in a world where mutated homosapien beings called Diclonius exist. Sounds really creepy but looks so amazing and epic. Still, creepy. Exactly this describes the setting of Elfen Lied. It is dark, it is frightening yet good. One of the most important things that has to be said is that this anime does not lack in brutality and bloodshed. You really should not watch this with your younger brother or sister. This show is even worse than Tokyo Ghoul. Produced by "Arms" this anime hasn't been censored, not even a little bit. The result:  "poorly dressed character scenes", violence and blood everywhere. I actually got used to that while watching anime, but I still have to close my eyes at one point: Beating up children, or "children like beings". I really can't stand that one. But what is the story behind Elfen Lied now?
Everything starts with Dicloniuses. As I said in the beginning they are mutated homosapiens, but that's not all. They are said to be selected by God, and will eventually one day lead to the destruction of all mankind. What's more, they have a pair of horns, but not creepy ones. They actually look like cute, little cat ears. The thing that makes this creatures so terrifying is their "sixth sense" which gives them telekinetic abilities. One of those Dicloniuses manages to break free from the laboratory where they have been captured. Lucy, the fled diclonius, murders most of the guards on her way out and becomes also shout in her head. Next time she wakes up, she finds her self naked on the beach, unable to remember anything. The only thing she is repeating is "Nyu". That's when two teenagers, Kouta and Yuka find her and take her to their house. Yeah, why not take a strange girl, with cat ears on her head that is just saying "Nyu" to your home? That will probably be fun. And it was, for me, not for them. Not at all.
Now to make some points about the plot and story.
Firstly, Elfen Lied's main story line is in the past. That's the focus of the story. And I have to say that it is very interesting despite the mainly poor present-plot-development. The way the retrospective story keeps you on tenterhooks the whole time  is amazing. You just can't stop and the number of thirteen episodes is perfect.
Secondly, Elfen Lied also turns into a love story from time to time. Into an annoying love story if I may add. At one side you have a boy and a monster he was in love with when they were kids. But you can't love or live with a mutant, can you? On the other side you have a bossy-older-sister-acting girl that is also in love with that boy. Now he is kinda being torn apart between those two. Sort out your priorities Boy!
When it comes to the genres this anime belongs to, you have a couple of them: Action, Horror, Drama, Romance, Supernatural, Seinen and Psychological. Let's focus on this Psychological because after Horror I'd say that this is the genre Elfen Lied belongs to the most. As in many Anime before you have the inner fight of a person. The good and the bad person are all the time in conflict. In our case you have the cute, little Nyu and the creepy Lucy. Now I think that Nyu also stands for the cute little Lucy she was before and the calm, lovely Lucy she can be sometimes. I don't know why but I'm starting to love these psychological fights more and more. Still I believe that everyone has two personalities inside, and don't say that you can hide or control the other one.
Now in the end, the thing that makes people love Elfen Lied so much is its uniqueness. You can watch a million of Anime and you won't find a similar one. And despite the not so good developed story line, and a few annoying parts Elfen Lied rocks because it's story is so unique. And one more thing, in short, you really don't want to miss the epicness of action Elfen Lied has.

Characters

If you looked at LUCY's personality you would say that she is a supportive and not s main character. There is I think not a single thing, except the mutant being, that makes her special. I know this sounds ridiculous but she reminded me of one of that high-school-mean-girls that takes away the boyfriend of the nice girl next door. I found it kinda funny. Still, for a mutant Lucy shows a huge load of emotions and feelings. I also felt really sorry for her in the end, because however she tried she couldn't live the life and be the Lucy she wanted to because of her Diclonicus side.

Now if these two weren't annoying, than I don't know. KOUTA and YUKA, although being cousins fell in love with each other, or Yuka fell in love with Kouta. I am sure that it was a one-sided romance, because Kouta never stopped loving someone else. He was a guy that didn't know what he actually wants and always tries to make everyone happy but ends up disappointing everyone. She on the other hand, is a bossy character that is too stiff for her age. Stop acting like that, your not his mother girl. But it was always funny to see her being jealous every time Kouta gave Nyu more attention. Being in love sure is difficult.

 Animation and Style

Oh my, 2004 was long ago and you can clearly see it at the animation of this anime. It really took me a lot to overcome and start watching Elfen Lied because I hate bad animation. The style is nothing better, just as every other anime of that time. But the dark animation age also has some light points in Elfen Lied. First of all the way the makers presented Lucy's telekinetic abilities was awesome. Invisible hands, I love it. The second thing is definitely the opening. It really describes the atmosphere in the show and the Latin opening theme gives you the extra creep. Here's the Link to the opening. By the way, I love the cover.

 Conclusion

To conclude, Elfen Lied is first of all an anime you shouldn't watch if you can't stand blood and brutality, because this anime is rich in both aspects. Next, it may have a poor present-story-development but the background story is very catchy and you won't regret watching it. It is also unique and with 13 episodes full of action loaded fights, you can easily finish it in two days without any problems. I know it is 11 years ago since Elfen Lied appeared but it is still a classic in the Horror-Anime genre.

My Childhood Anime

While all the other kids in Bosnia were watching Cartoon Network cartoons, I ended up watching RTL II and Nickelodeon. Nick also had a lot of good cartoons like Danny Phantom, Avatar, The Fairly Odd Parents etc. Yet little AnimeGirl's favorite cartoons were ANIME of course. Although I had no idea what "Anime" actually were, I loved them. Even my mother told me once, while I was watching anime: "Oh, are those the cartoons you used to watch as a 5-year-old?". Now twelve years later I am still watching anime, but now knowing what makes anime so unique. I always say that now I am a "Full-Time" anime lover, AnimeGirl. Although I forgot most of the details of those Anime, I remember one thing. I loved them!
Another funny thing about my childhood is that after my parents left Germany and came back to Bosnia and Herzegovina they also brought a German TV receiver with them. And so I grew up watching only cartoons in German, Anime too. I have to admit that it had a good influence on me since I became a fluent German speaker but when I now hear a German-dubbed anime I instantly start laughing. It is so hilarious. Don't watch German-dubbed anime, but how to make it clear Germans hardly ever Subb something.
Back to Anime. Today's blog post is devoted to all those Anime that made me the AnimeGirl I am now.

I will start with the one I remember as first. The first anime in my life. Sailor Moon. So it's basically about a group of girls having the power to transform into a Sailor (Moon, Jupiter, Venus...Every girl had her own name kinda) and with that saving the World from the Dark Kingdom and its evil ruler, Queen Beryl. They were awesome, as I was always a fan of fairies, magic and that stuff. Now, a month ago (or sth. like that) I was watching TV and while switching trough the channels I saw them. They were again on Tv and I just couldn't believe it. It was so awesome to see them again. You don't know how excited I was. I just wish that my younger sister would at least try watching anime, but that kinda seems impossible.

Now, I am 100% sure that all of you have heard of these two anime shows. Dragon Ball and One Piece. Interesting is that now, eight years later, when I stopped watching these they become popular. Everyone who is watching anime is watching either Dragon Ball or One Piece. "What AnimeGirl are you, not watching DBZ or One P." Oh come on, I watched them before you even knew they existed. Get on my level. True, I don't remember a lot about them, especially Dragon Ball, but I still come across One Piece on TV sometimes and of course I watch it. It brings me back to that awesome time where I didn't have to worry about my grades at school, university etc. If I have, and I hope I will, have children one day, I will definitely make them watch them these two cartoons although they will be about two decades old. But, legends are legends.

Now, I'd be super mad if you didn't know this anime. Forget Sherlock Holmes because this guy is a genius.Seven-Year-Old Edogawa Conan was actually a 17-Year-Old detective called Kudo Shinichi well, until... Until one day while he was trying to catch some dealers he was knocked unconscious and given a drug that should have actually killed him. When he woke up again he found him self being a little kid. He hid his true identity and continued his detective work in the shadows of his crushes father, Detective Kogorou. I remember this anime very well. It was always so intriguing and funny at the same time. I really enjoyed watching Detective Conan and I could recommend it to every little kid. Anime, a thing for all ages.

Digimon Adventure was one of my favorites too. The way the kids had their Digimons or pet like creatures was awesome. I remember Taichi being my first anime-crush (hahahahah), I have to laugh every time I think about it. Seven kids were trapped inside a strange digital world with creatures called Digimons (as said before). They become friends and later the kids realize that they were chosen to protect the Digital world from evil Digimons. I remember just a couple of flashes from this anime, like one scene in which Taichi says goodbye to his Digimon, or some action scenes etc. On the whole, it is an adventurous anime with a lot emotion in it. I loved it.

I am so sad that I don't remember much of this anime. I just know that I loved it the most. Ojamajo Doremi is a cute, little story about the main character Doremi. She calles her self "The unluckiest bishoujo in the world", but lucky for her she becomes a witch. Together with her friends they aim to pass the witch exams and become full fledged witches. As a little anime girl I've always been in love with magic, fairies, wizards, witches and I still am.  For the same reason I enjoy watching Avatar, Fairy Tail, Naruto, Tokyo Ravens...

When I sometimes come across one of these anime, I have to stop and take a look. Although they might be a bit boring, because Kids-Anime, I still love them the most. They made my childhood and they will always stay as a memory of the great time I had. And even if one day I won't be able to remember anything from my childhood I will still be able to take a look at this blog post and remember that I had a childhood full of adventures, magic and great stories. Thank you Japan, for being a part of my childhood.
